What's up everyone? I had a watch party with some of my friends watching the finals of Eurovision 2025 just last night. And quite honestly, we had a blast. I did at least.
How is that? Let me go over some stuff and explain why I liked it.
With a few exceptions I can barely recall any songs that I didn't like. We all kept a chart where we tried ordering every song from rank 1 to 26 and it was really hard at times. My limitation for "hey, these songs are good" ended up at something around rank 23 in the end.
Here is top 12 of the chart by the way (12 because of 12 points... haha):
Rank | Country | Artist | Title | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Italy | Lucio Corsi | Volevo essere un duro | Lucio just felt so happy, and idk why but his harmonica reminded me a little of Alexander Rybak. I love the instrumentals a lot! |
2 | Austria | JJ | Wasted Love | His voice is quite impressive. Congrats on the win. |
3 | Portugal | Napa | Deslocado | Similarly to Italy, this band just felt real happy to be here. It's chiillllll |
4 | Lithuania | Katarsis | Tavo akys | Appreciate your bass players. I love the noir sort of feeling |
5 | Albania | Shkodra Elektronike | Zjerm | This has no right to go as hard as it did. I love the choice of instruments. |
6 | Armenia | Parg | Survivor | Always like myself some good rock. |
7 | Denmark | Sissal | Hallucination | This one kind of stood out to me. It just perfectly represented it's genre |
8 | San Marino | Gabry Ponte | Tutta l'Italia | TUTTA L'ITALIA TUTTA L'ITALIA TUTTA L'ITALIA, this edition of Eurovision was so Italycore |
9 | Sweden | KAJ | Bara bada bastu | It pains me to give it such a low rank because it was so good, it should be higher. It manages to be silly AND good at the same time |
10 | Ukraine | Ziferblat | Bird of Pray | Hey this one was pretty cool. I love these breaks in the end. Perfect. |
11 | Norway | Kyle Alessandro | Lighter | layyyderrr. Average rock. Nice. |
12 | Germany | Abor & Tynna | Baller | In terms of being a disco song, this is perfect. While I'm not the biggest fan of it (I don't party) you got to give it extra points for being catchy af. |
I genuinely found myself listening to multiple songs even afterwards. Especially "Volevo essere un duro", so damn good. All of that even though my mind is currently taking up Jamie Paige's 'Machine Love' constantly.
Quite honestly that point also confirms itself when you look at the chat from our watch party. We were praising the songs a lot!
It was so Italian and thats good. Tutta L'Italia. Period.
Lets face it: Eurovision 2024 was terrible. The winning song is great but this very edition was plagued with controversy after controversy, which is why it was hard to watch. Especially with multiple artists thinking of simply not competing because of these. It really ruined the atmosphere. I still miss Joost with Europapa, it would have genuinely been one of the best songs in the whole tournament, ever, not because the song itself is good (it still is good, but Fairytale exists), but because of the European message it carries.
Check the Wikipedia page for ESC2024: There are around 5 subcategories in the controversy tab. This tab doesn't even exist on the ESC2025 page. I'm not arguing that there was nothing wrong: I've heard of a couple of things and there were still protesting marches in Basel (I had seen them in the German pre-show), but it wasn't the shitshow that 2024 was.
we do need Joost back though.
Eurovision is always that one night a year where I like to form a watch party with friends and just talk about music overnight. It's not something I could watch alone because it just wouldn't be the same. So thank you, Thirsty and Frsik: Nice night we had.
